This course examines contemporary developments and emerging challenges in the protection and promotion of human rights within the international legal system. It explores how human rights norms operate in modern governance, security, development, environmental protection, and global justice frameworks.
The programme builds on foundational human rights principles by analysing how rights are applied in complex real world contexts, particularly within Africa and the global South. It emphasises the interaction between international standards and domestic implementation, as well as the evolving responsibilities of states, international institutions, corporations, and civil society actors.
The course develops critical thinking, policy analysis, and legal reasoning skills necessary for addressing modern human rights challenges. Students will learn to apply international human rights standards to contemporary global issues and evaluate the effectiveness of legal and institutional responses.
This programme prepares students to engage with complex human rights problems in legal practice, governance, advocacy, and international policy environments.
